Assault outside Trinity College
I just witnessed an assault outside Trinity College Great Gate.
The assaulter was a male of Chinese ethnicity, who spoke a Peking dialect. He wore a blue polo shirt with a PRC flag on its sleeve.
The assaultee was a female of Chinese ethnicity, who spoke a Peking dialect. She held a printed copy of the Epoch Times (《大紀元時報》), and attempted to talk to a group of people wearing the same shirt as the assaulter.
The assaulter, using both hands, pushed the assaultee twice at her shoulders. e was later held back by other members of his group, who advised him to stop fighting.

Random thoughts on the controversy regarding the Facebook page "名校Secrets"
[Context: Hong Kong Facebook users, age 13-<~30]
In an era where everyone is talking about blockchains, I’m surprised no-one has proposed using a blockchain-based bulletin board as an alternative to the said page.
It would work a bit like BitMessage (though my last usage of it was about 5-6 years ago, and no pun intended), but each message is a signed cleartext broadcast instead of an encrypted message, and perhaps with the added features of quoting and/or replying to previous messages, and/or adding likes/dislikes, similar in feature to PTT.
There are two potential problems (assuming no 51% attacks), the first being a lack of (monetary) incentive for block-writers. I don’t suppose “SchoolCoin” would attract any monetary value, so such a BBS would have to rely solely on donated processing power (kind of like Tor relays). The second problem is spam/scam. Client-side spam filters can be implemented; note however that filter rule writers may be trying to censor posts.
Implementing an effective like/dislike / upvote/downvote system may not be straightforward. A spammer or a censor with sufficient resources can easily abuse it for their benefit. Potential mitigation: IP-address-based scoring system which reduces the importance of votes if many votes originated from the same IP address? Tor/open proxies may be used to bypass this, and reducing vote importance simply based on IP address being an exit node is being unfriendly for privacy-minded users or users suffering from large-scale internet censorship. So perhaps we can weigh votes based on past contributions, or even based on the received votes of past posts (though probably more computationally expensive to calculate). A sigmoid function may be a good choice for weighing, so that enthusiastic users won’t be given too much importance. An alternative is to have a logarithmic upper bound.

Comment on John Paul Stevens's opinion to repeal the 2nd Amendment
“There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent.”

It’s interesting how people see “smartphones” as a thing which “connects” people.
I prefer to call them “portable computers”, which are able to communicate with each other iff a communication link is established.
If I were to set the question, I would replace “smartphones” with “the advancement of telecommunication technologies and digital electronics”.

Log of noisy/disruptive behaviour at C Pearce Hostel
2018-03-02T01Z Awoken by loud noises. Saw people gathering in the corridor outside C5 Pearce Hostel. Asked them to shut up.
2018-03-04T23:25Z Loud noises. Few people in corridor, several (~10) in the room next to C5. Been told it is a party room. Asked them to quiet down, reminded a party participant that college regulations require parties to end before 23:30.
2018-03-05T00:40Z Occasional loud screams and laughs could still be heard. Saw some of the participants (same people as those seen at 23:25). One of them promised to leave immediately.

Nyaa Comments RSS Generator
Currently, Nyaa.si provides no way to notify users of new comments. I have written a server-side (HTTP) script which parses the comments and constructs an RSS feed (actually an Atom feed, but people seems to uses them interchangeably).
The script is hosted on https://nyaacomments.tk and the source code is available on GitHub.
Usage instructions are available at the hosted URL.
